Disney’s live-action “Moana” movie pulled in slightly better than expected numbers on Friday, with the film pulling in $18 million (including previews).
As a result, overall weekend estimates are no longer falling as they have been for the past few days, and it looks like the film will debut with a $42-46 million domestic opening weekend. That’s still decidedly below expectations and quite a bit down from the $60+ million projections a week ago.
But working in its favour is audience reaction. The film has landed a solid A- CinemaScore with overall audiences, including an A with women, and an A+ with the under-18 demographic.
In its second weekend, “Minions and Monsters” are headed for a $21 million take – a drop of just 43% which is being considered a good hold for the animated sequel. “Toy Story 5” is headed for third in its fourth weekend with a $19 million haul.
Coming in fourth will be the ultra-gory “Evil Dead Burn” which is now headed for a $15 million opening and landed a B CinemaScore.
In fifth place is “Young Washington,” which saw a $7 million second weekend haul – a steep 64% fall-off from its debut. For distributor Angel Studios this is certainly no “Sound of Freedom” which saw a 39% increase in its second weekend.
Sixth place went to A24’s “The Invite” which pulled in $4.3 million in its first weekend of wide release and third weekend overall. The adult sex comedy is doing just OK numbers.
Seventh is “Obsession” which, despite the title being made available on PVOD last week, fell only 20% in its now ninth weekend with a $4.1 million haul.
Eighth is “Supergirl,” which fell 55% in its third weekend to $3.8 million. The domestic total sits at $66.2 million, and estimates currently are that the film will end its theatrical run at around $130-140 million worldwide.
“Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass” also opened this week and didn’t make the top 10 – looking to debut with $1 million for the weekend.
