Filmmaker Richard Kelly hasn’t made a new film since 2009’s “The Box,” but he’s finally returned to the entertainment world with “The Philosophy of Time Travel,” an 800+ page novel that serves as a sequel to his most iconic work – 2001’s “Donnie Darko”.
Set in 1988, in the immediate aftermath of the original film with Jake Gyllenhaal’s titular Southern California teen Donnie dead. According to Kelly, the book is the first step in a larger plan to make multiple “Donnie Darko” film sequels.
The plan is to adapt the work as an animated/motion-capture film, and then continue the story with a live-action project that jumps 28 years into the future.
The novel is written in found-documents style with alternating pieces from Donnie’s mother, Rose, and father, Eddie, and “them vigorously documenting what is happening to them and why their son has died and their paranoia and their separate detective missions about how to figure out what happened and why it happened.”
Kelly says he has not yet approached the cast about reprising their roles for sequel films. Alongside Gyllenhaal, the likes of Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Mary McDonnell, Holmes Osborne, Katharine Ross, Patrick Swayze, Noah Wyle, and Seth Rogen starred.
The book will debut in the fourth quarter of this year, in time with the 25th anniversary of the film.
