The Spanish release of Taika Waititi’s “Klara and the Sun” has reportedly been scrapped with more locations across Europe potentially following.
The news comes from Spanish publication Hobby Consolas (via Screenrant). It follows on from a Deadline report indicating the film “sat around for two years with Sony befuddled as to how to release it”.
Though based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s best-selling sci-fi novel and boasting both the acclaimed director and a strong cast led by Jenna Ortega, the film has not had much luck since it premiered at the London Film Festival just over two weeks ago.
Reviews for the title were overwhelmingly negative, the movie taking a critical drubbing with just 26% (4.5/10) on Rotten Tomatoes and a 30/100 on Metacritic.
Then the film opened in the U.S., Canada and a few markets like Australia last weekend to terrible results – taking in just $701,059 domestically and $1.44 million worldwide.
Amy Adams, Steve Buscemi and Natasha Lyonne co-star in the film which follows Klara (Ortega), an Artificial Friend who wants nothing more than to find the perfect home. When Klara meets Josie (Mia Tharia), each immediately senses a kindred spirit in the other. Josie has a fraught relationship with her mother (Adams) and they’ve suffered great loss, but Klara’s innocent wonder and unwavering loyalty begin to heal the family and bring light to Josie’s complicated world.
