When it comes to tie-in movie merchandise, nothing in the past few years has come close to the level of chatter over the popcorn bucket for “Dune: Part Two”.
The bucket, which has a moulded sandworm maw for a lid, drew a ton of jokes including a Saturday Night Live sketch for its raunchy connotations and suggestive design. But it also became a retail hit and led to a merchandising wave for exhibitors.
Now, with “Dune: Part Three” nearly upon us, Warners is sticking with what worked but tweaking it slightly.
The result is two variations on that original bucket – the Sandworm Thumper Collectible and a Double Sandworm Collectible – along with a drink cup resembling the Spacing Guild Navigator character seen in the trailers.
All three are bound to draw inevitable comparisons to intimate toys. The Sandworm Thumper Collectible is essentially the first popcorn bucket with the maw at an angle and a small moving thumper that goes up and down.
The Double Sandworm Collectible has two maws for people to share popcorn. Mystery keychains and a Sandworm plush will also be available. Both buckets will come with a large popcorn and be available at AMC locations in the United States and at Odeon Cinemas throughout Europe.
