Emmy-winning “Succession” star Sarah Snook is set to star in a new limited series take on “The Birds”.
The project is dubbed a “visceral, present-day reimagining” of the original Daphne du Maurier gothic horror novella rather than a remake of the famed (and very loose) film adaptation by Alfred Hitchcock back in 1963.
“The Leftovers” and HBO’s “Watchmen” writer Tom Spezialy is penning the new series, which hails from Universal International Studios and David Heyman’s Heyday Television.
Aussie actress Snook’s plays a travelling magistrate named Myra Massey, the series sees her returning to her isolated Alaskan hometown for a routine presumptive death hearing.
She was expecting a simple cold case and instead finds her childhood friend’s bullet-ridden body. When Myra is forced to step outside her role as judge to untangle the mystery, nature itself turns hostile with a wave of bird attacks.
Now, Myra isn’t just trying to close a case, she’s fighting to survive in a place where death lurks in both the shadows and the skies. The original short story was essentially a self-contained piece set in Cornwall, while the Hitchcock film took place in Bodega Bay, California.
Spezialy, Snook, Heyman and Jennifer Gabler Rawlings all executive produce. Several attempts have been made to adapt the novella over the years, with both a Naomi Watts-led film in 2007 and a BBC series in 2017 failing to make it out of development.
