While the main D23 presentation kicks off shortly, some news has already begun emerging out of Disney’s D23 expo today – especially in regard to “The Simpsons”.
First up, the film sequel has scored a new title – “The New Simpsons Movie” – with the film set to hit cinemas on September 3rd 2027. A logo has been spotted at the event which recreates Homer’s famous garden hedge meme.
Also revealed is that the cult classic open-world game “The Simpsons: Hit and Run” could finally be getting a revival according to creator Matt Groening. Appearing on stage, he was asked whether there will ever be another “The Simpsons: Hit & Run” game.
Groening teased: “I think the original game is coming back in some form” he said before current showrunner Matt Selman cut in with “or not.” This is being interpreted as Groening letting slip news that wasn’t supposed to be announced yet.
Before now, the game has been stuck in a rights mire until relatively recently. The game was originally published by Vivendi, which was acquired by Activision, which was acquired by Microsoft. Disney owns the Simpsons IP. It’s unknown if anyone outside of Disney and Microsoft would need to submit their approval.
Earlier this year, Selman teased “never say never” about the possibility of more “The Simpsons: Hit and Run”. Radical Entertainment developed the original game, which turned Springfield into a GTA-esque open-world.
Groening also responded to Bart voice actor Nancy Cartwright’s recent comments on the Inside of You podcast suggesting that the show producers are considering ending the series at the 40-season mark (the show ends its 37th season later this month).
Groening tells LAD Bible: “There’s many things about the Simpsons on the internet that you cannot believe. I don’t think.. My guess is that was a tossed off remark made by Nancy, I don’t know. But no, we’re never going to end, come on!.”
