Don’t Expect A “Super Smash Bros.” Film

Universal Pictures, Illumination, Nintendo

The inclusion of Star Fox character Fox McCloud (voiced by Glen Powell) in the just-released “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” has had fans salivating over the prospect of a potential “Super Smash Bros.” movie down the line.

Several characters from other Nintendo properties, like “Pikmin,” also appear in the new film, which has only further fanned the flames. At least until today.

Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri have both thrown a bucket of cold water on such a prospect, the pair telling Polygon that the chances of a Super Smash Bros-style crossover movie are very low at the present time.

Miyamoto indicates they’re focusing on what’s immediate and have no grand “Avengers”-style team-up plans. Rather, if there will be inclusions it will be as supporting characters or cameos:

“Right off the bat, I’ll say that unlike something like Super Smash Bros., I don’t think you’ll have a situation [where] all Nintendo characters would be joining [together in one film].

Meledandri added that with making these movies, the inclusions of non-Mario characters are purely incidental as opposed to something more strategic, such as building an interconnected fictional universe:

“Our process is actually very different from that. It’s much more geared toward conversations about what would be fun within a certain scene in the movie. So these ideas come up based on, ‘Oh, wouldn’t it be fun if Pikmin appeared here? Wouldn’t that be fun? If we agree that it’s a fun idea, then we look to Miyamoto-san to just make his own judgment about whether or not it feels right to him.”

Miyamoto says he’s open to more cameos and supporting roles like they’ve been doing so far:

“We have plenty of characters to create a movie, and yet we wanted to add a little bit of spice, a little bit of secret cameos here and there. And you’ll see that there’s one secret character that plays a big role. So I think there might be introductions of characters like this potentially in the future, something like that.”

Head over to Polygon for the full interview. The comments come as Meledandri tells Forbes that Glen Powell campaigned for the Star Fox role long before anyone knew the character would be included in the ‘Mario’ sequel.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is out in cinemas now.
