Lee Isaac Chung Exits The “Oceans” Prequel

Universal Pictures

Oscar-nominated filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung (“Minari,” “Twister”) has exited the upcoming “Ocean’s 11” prequel film in the works at Warner Bros. Pictures and Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment.

Chung and Robbie were developing the project together with a studio spokesman, saying this is an “amicable split due to creative differences”.

In a further statement, they very much keep the doors open for Chung and Robbie to work together on something else: “Lee Isaac is a singular filmmaking talent whose vision and partnership have been invaluable to Warner Bros. and LuckyChap throughout this journey. Our experience with him has only deepened our enthusiasm to collaborate on future projects together.”

A search for a new director is underway on the project, which doesn’t appear to have been immediately impacted by Paramount’s plans to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery. At last report, both Bradley Cooper and Benicio Del Toro were in talks to star alongside Robbie.

The film boasts a screenplay by Carrie Solomon, based on characters created by George Clayton Johnson & Jack Golden Russell, and is rumoured to be a prequel set around the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix.

It is separate from the “Ocean’s 14” project, which George Clooney indicated back in December had its budget approved and aimed to shoot this summer, with 1979’s “Going in Style” serving as the project’s creative inspiration.
