At present, both Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Doomsday” and Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Dune: Part Three” are slated to release in cinemas on December 18th 2026.
In a new episode of reporter Matt Belloni’s The Town podcast, he indicates Warner Bros. Pictures has no plans to back down from that December 18th release date – a date they earmarked first after all.
As a result, there’s already talk of the date being the potential next Barbenheimer event for cinemas, with a term having already been bandied about on social media – ‘Dunesday’.
“Dune: Part Three” will close out Denis Villeneuve’s trilogy of films, adapting the second book “Dune Messiah” which effectively ends the story of Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet).
“Avengers: Doomsday,” meanwhile, closes out the multiverse saga but also serves as the first of a double “Avengers” film punch with “Avengers: Secret Wars” due out December 2027.
A big issue will be IMAX screens. “Dune: Part Three” will have priority as the new cinematographer Linus Sandgren is reportedly shooting the project not just on film but with new generation IMAX cameras this time (sounds like the same ones used on “The Odyssey”).
The Russos have previously indicated they hoped to land IMAX screens for “Avengers: Doomsday,” but whether that will be the case… we’ll see.
