“Yotei” Has Outsold “AC: Shadows” On PS5

Several weeks after release, PS5-exclusive “Ghost of Yotei” has remained a major topic of contention in the gaming community as arguments fly back and forth over the game’s success.

Sony hasn’t released any official numbers as to how well the title has sold, but third-party analytics have indicated the title is doing very well. That has deeply upset a small pocket of social media users pushing for a boycott that appears to have failed.

Earlier this week, Circana analyst Mat Piscatella (via IGN) said the title is performing “somewhere between fine and great given all the factors at play” and added that it’s ‘basically flat’ with predecessor “Ghost of Tsushima” which was a breakout hit in its first week of sales.

The titles matched sales numbers despite ‘Tsushima’ launching on a 20% larger install base, during the height pandemic (when game sales and engagement were in a major boom), and with a cheaper price point.

Today, analytics firm Alinea (via Forbes) reports that the title has sold more copies on PS5 in three weeks than “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” has done on the same console in the seven months since its release.

Of course, ‘Shadows’ was a multiplatform title launch with PS5 sales accounting for 56% of overall sales of the title – the other 44% went to PC and Xbox.

Both titles were drawn into video game culture wars – ‘Shadows’ for having a black samurai character, ‘Yotei’ for having a non-busty female lead, along with social media postings from two of the many hundreds of people working on the game – with one of those reportedly fired before the game’s release.
