“Him,” “Beautiful Journey” Fizzle At Box-Office

Universal Pictures, Sony Pictures

The U.S. box-office came to a screeching halt this weekend, the overall domestic box-office falling by a massive 49% from last week and down to a pretty weak $77 million.

The presence of two newcomers doesn’t seem to have moved the needle much. One of them, the Jordan Peele-produced sports horror film “Him,” is now in a dead heat with last week’s chart-topping “Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle” anime film for the top spot.

Both movies are targeting around $15-16 million each for the weekend. The “Demon Slayer” film fell 77% in its second weekend, not unexpectedly, as anime films are notoriously massively front-loaded.

Even so, it’s already the highest-grossing anime movie at the domestic box office and has crossed the $100 million domestic mark today.

“Him” debuted in the #1 spot on Friday with $6.5 million, but the terrible reviews – just 28% with critics on RT and a C- CinemaScore – combined with actual NFL games on Sunday are expected to pull it back a bit.

Far worse for ware was the Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell romance fantasy drama “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” which will debut in sixth place with just $3.5 million. The title was similarly panned, aa 38% on RT and a B- CinemaScore, and $45 million budget means it’s going to probably struggle to make profit.

Also in the top five were “The Conjuring: Last Rites” in third with $11.9 million, “The Long Walk” in fourth with $6.3 million (down 46% in its second weekend) and “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale” with $6.1 million (down 66% in its second weekend.
