“Alien: Romulus 2” Needs A New Director

20th Century Studios

Fede Alvarez is reportedly not returning to direct the sequel to last year’s “Alien: Romulus”.

The “Evil Dead” and “Don’t Breathe” helmer scored very good notices for his take on the “Alien” universe with a story set between the events of the original 1979 Ridley Scott film and James Cameron’s 1986 sequel.

Both Cailee Spaeny as ‘Rain’ Carradine and David Jonsson as Andy are expected to return for the follow-up, which Alvarez is writing. The film does not yet have a release date from 20th Century Studios, so it’s not clear when it might go into production.

Speaking with TooFab at Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights, he confirms the script is complete:

“We just finished the script, actually, for a sequel to Romulus. But I’m gonna pass the torch on this one as director. I’m going to produce it, with Ridley Scott, we’re gonna produce it together, and we’re right now trying to find a new filmmaker to come in.

I think that’s usually what has happened, except for Ridley, filmmakers come, you make one, and you pass the baton to the next one. But we wrote the story because we really love what we started with Romulus, and we want to continue the story. We love the story, and now we just want to find a director that really wants to go for the jugular.”

Álvarez adds that he wants to work on ‘a personal project’ for his next directorial effort, a film that he and his “co-writer [have] been keeping on the back burner for a while” and “we felt it was the right time, now, to go work on an original.”

However, he won’t go into any specifics about that project.
