BoulderLight Pictures (“Barbarian”) and Divide/Conquer (“Heart Eyes”) are partnering to produce a whole new take on the Amityville supernatural horror story.
Joseph and Vanessa Winter, the filmmakers behind the found footage horror tale “Deadstream,” will direct from their own script. No studio is attached yet, but BoulderLight has a first look deal at New Line Cinema.
Raphael Margules, J.D. Lifshitz, Adam Hendricks & Greg Gilreath will produce, and the project is being fast-tracked with filming potentially beginning as early as the last quarter of this year.
“The Amityville Horror” was published as a book in 1977 which led to a series of films that began in 1979 and was followed by a bunch of sequels before a high-profile reboot in 2005 starring Ryan Reynolds and the long delayed “Amityville: The Awakening” in 2017.
This take is avoiding any of the IP of the book or prior films. The DeFeo Jr. murders and the Lutz family’s subsequent claims of haunting will not factor into the story. Instead, the movie focuses on the public domain elements – namely, the notorious Amityville house itself.
