The first night of the Creative Arts Emmys is underway at the Peacock Theater in Downtown Los Angeles.
The first of two ceremonies held this weekend will focus on unscripted and documentary programs with tomorrow’s ceremony focusing on scripted programs.
However the one major award handed out tonight that had a lot of attention was for Best Animated Program with Netflix’s highly acclaimed “Blue Eye Samurai” taking home the honor.
It beat out Max’s short-lived but acclaimed “Scavengers Reign” and Marvel’s much-discussed “X-Men ’97” along with FOX stalwarts “The Simpsons” and “Bob’s Burgers”.
On Metacritic, ‘Samurai’ with an 88/100 holds the edge over “X-Men ’97” with 82/100 and “Scavengers Reign” with 84/100 but all three shows have been widely praised and made for a tighter race than usual this year.
Also winning awards were Angela Bassett for voice work on National Geographic’s “Queens,” Maya Rudolph for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance for her work in “Big Mouth,” “Jeopardy” for Outstanding Game Show, Alan Cumming for Outstanding Reality Host, and a making of special for FX’s “Shōgun” won the Outstanding Short Form Non-Fiction or Reality Series award.
