“Carol,” “May December” and “I’m Not There” filmmaker Todd Haynes has revealed his next project.
Haynes recently filmed “De Noche,” the queer romantic drama starring Pedro Pascal and Danny Ramirez that was originally slated to star Joaquin Phoenix who famously dropped out at the last minute.
The film, a love story between two men set in the 1930s and filmed primarily in Mexico City, is expected to be a serious awards contender next year. Haynes though is already lining up what’s next for him.
Speaking with Le Point magazine, Haynes says the film will be an adaptation of Jean Genet’s 1947 play “Les Bonnes” (The Maids) and suggests that Cate Blanchett could star in the movie:
“I’ll let you in on something: my next film – after the one I’m currently finishing, De Noche – will be an adaptation of The Maids. I have a very particular approach to the story; I obviously can’t say anything, but I’ve never seen this approach anywhere else…I think Cate Blanchett, who performed the play on stage with Isabelle Huppert, will be in my film.”
Haynes’s most recent film was “May December,” which scored an Oscar nomination for its script and made the AFI Top 10 of 2023.
