With the company’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard complete, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says they have plans to ‘double down’ on game production and publishing.
Speaking with Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner in Berlin and reported on by Business Insider, Nadella was asked why the Activision acquisition was so important.
He says gaming has been a core tenet of Microsoft since the beginning along with its developer tools and proprietary software, and the field is only going to get more important as the younger generations take over:
“Gaming is the one place where we think we have a real contribution to make in consumer markets. If I look at it, the amount of time people allocate to gaming is going up and Gen Z is going to do more of that.
The way games are made, the way the games are delivered, is changing radically. Whether it’s mobile, or consoles, or PCs, or even the cloud.
So, we’re looking forward to really doubling down both as a game producer and a publisher. Now we’ll be one of the largest game publishers and also as a company that’s building platforms for it.”
The comments come as Microsoft has also announced that it will be holding an Xbox Partner Preview on Wednesday, October 25th to show off titles being developed by third-party partners. No Activision Blizzard games will be included at this year’s event.
