Baz Luhrmann’s six-part limited series “Faraway Downs” has locked down its premiere and release dates.
The series will serve as the closing title of the inaugural SXSW Sydney Screen Festival on October 21st with a world premiere.
Then the series will launch simultaneously worldwide on Hulu in the U.S. and on the Star section of Disney+ elsewhere on November 26th.
The project is a recut of his $130 million-budgeted 165-minute 2008 period drama epic “Australia” – re-editing and expanding the film with deleted footage into a series.
Set during World War II, the story centers on an English aristocrat, Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman), who travels halfway across the world to confront her wayward husband and sell an unusual asset: a million-acre cattle ranch in the Australian Outback called Faraway Downs.
A ruthless Australian cattle baron named King Carney (Bryan Brown) plots to take her land, and she reluctantly joins forces with a rough-hewn cattle drover (Hugh Jackman) to protect her ranch. Soon a love affair between the two begins.
Brandon Walters, David Wenham, Jack Thompson and David Gulpilil co-star. The new series version is dubbed a ‘variation’ on the 165-minute original film. A runtime for the new series hasn’t been revealed.
