Oscar winner Viola Davis has announced she is stepping away from the upcoming thriller “G20” at Amazon Studios.
Noah and Logan Miller (“White Boy Rick”) which unfolds at the annual G20 Summit which is overtaken by terrorists. Davis is playing U.S. President Taylor Sutton, who must bring all her statecraft and military experience to bear to defend her family, her fellow leaders, and the world.
The project hails from the non-AMPTP-affiliated studio MRC and is only being distributed by Amazon. Thus, it is one of those productions out there that SAG-AFTRA has provided with a waiver.
Said waiver allows it to start production amid the actor’s strike. However, Davis says in a statement she will not work on the film in an act of solidarity with the union:
“I love this movie, but I do not feel that it would be appropriate for this production to move forward during the strike. I appreciate that the producers of the project agree with this decision. JuVee Productions and I stand in solidarity with actors, SAG/AFTRA and the WGA.”
G20 joins a long list of TV shows and movies that have been granted waivers amid the actor’s strike to continue or begin production under different interim agreements and designations with independent productions.
Davis’ step back follows comments from comedian and actress Sarah Silverman that have gone viral about projects that have been allowed to move forward.
Silverman said when actors joined the strike, she believed it would force studios and streamers to act faster to reach a deal because they couldn’t work at all.
Now with various exceptions being made, she thinks it will prolong the strike, and the stars making these indie movies are doing is effectively “scabbing”.
