John le Carre Documentary Sets Release

Apple TV+

The late British spy David Cornwell, better known as author John le Carre, is set to get a new feature documentary about his extraordinary life for the Apple TV+ service.

The project is being titled “The Pigeon Tunnel” and will be directed by acclaimed “The Fog of War,” “The Thin Blue Line” and “Wormwood” filmmaker Errol Morris.

Cornwell worked for the British security services in the 1950s and 1960s with stints at both MI5 and MI6 – conducting interrogations, tapping telephone lines and more. His spy career ended abruptly in 1964 when he was ‘outed’ as a spy to the KGB by infamous double agent Kim Philby.

Around that time, he also became the bestselling author of legendary books like “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” “The Spy Who Came in from the Cold” and “The Night Manager”.

Many of his works have been translated to the big and small screen, including those aforementioned three titles plus “The Constant Gardener,” “A Most Wanted Man,” “The Tailor of Panama,” “The Russia House,” “Our Kind of Traitor,” “The Little Drummer Girl,” “The Looking Glass War” and “Smiley’s People”.

The documentary film spans six decades as Cornwell delivers his “final and most candid interview” combined with rare archival footage and dramatized vignettes. Philip Glass and Paul Leonard-Morgan will collaborate on an original score for the film.

Cornwell died in 2020 at the age of 89. “The Pigeon Tunnel” is set to premiere on Apple TV+ on October 20th.
