“Mare of Easttown” and “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” star Evan Peters has closed a deal to star opposite Jared Leto in “Tron: Ares” for Disney Pictures.
Joachim Ronning (“Kon-Tiki,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales”) is directing which aims to begin shooting in August in Vancouver.
Disney released the original “Tron” in 1982, with Jeff Bridges starring as video game designer Kevin Flynn who is transported inside his own creation and teams up with a security program named Tron (Bruce Boxleitner).
Though a flop at the time it went on to become a cult hit. Disney finally made a follow-up with “Top Gun: Maverick” filmmaker Joseph Kosinski’s “Tron: Legacy” in 2010.
A decent performer at the box-office, it didn’t do enough to immediately generate sequels. Yet again, it became a cult hit whose visual style and soundtrack still hold up to this day.
A third film has been in the works on and off ever since ‘Legacy’ was released. Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne are penning the new film which will focus on the emergence of a sentient program that crosses over into the human world that is not ready for contact.
Leto has been attached to the project for several years and will play Ares, the manifestation of the program.
Other key roles are a soldier in the computer world and an awkward gamer in the human world. Emma Ludbrook, Jeffrey Springer and Leto are producing.
The original “Tron” director Steven Lisberger tells the outlet he is helping out the project: “It’s going to happen. My goal with these things in playing the Obi-Wan role is to say the one sentence that has an impact. I try to say something that is useful to them without getting into the weeds.”
