Several crew members were reportedly injured on the set of the “Gladiator” sequel in Morocco whilst filming a stunt sequence for the Ridley Scott-directed film.
The film serves as a several decades later-set sequel to Scott’s 2000 epic and stars Oscar-nominee Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger star and they are joined by returnees from the first film like Connie Nielsen, Derek Jacobi and Djimon Hounsou. Scott directs from a script by David Scarpa.
The accident is said to have occurred towards the end of a day of filming, with six people receiving treatment. Two crew members were treated locally and discharged, four remain in hospital.
All of the impacted crew members were treated for burn injuries according to a source for Variety. No cast members were harmed. In an official statement, a spokesperson for Paramount Pictures says:
“While filming a planned stunt sequence on the set of the ‘Gladiator’ sequel, an accident occurred during which several crew members experienced non-life-threatening injuries.
The safety and full medical services teams on-site were able to act quickly so that those who were impacted immediately received necessary care. They are all in stable condition and continue to receive treatment.
The well-being of the cast and crew is of the utmost importance to us, and we have strict health and safety procedures in place on all our productions. We will continue monitoring the situation and taking all necessary precautions as we resume production.”
Production on the film recently began in Ouarzazate, Morocco, with additional filming locations planned for Malta and the United Kingdom over the next four months.
“Gladiator 2” is slated to hit theaters on November 22nd 2024.
