Meta has announced the Meta Quest 3, the next generation of the virtual and mixed-reality headset and successor to the unit originally launched as the Oculus Quest 2 in 2020 before rebranded as Meta Quest 2 last year.
Launching this Fall starting at $499.99 for the 128 Gb model, the VR unit boasts a higher resolution, stronger performance with a new Snapdragon chip offering over double the GPU power, and a 40% slimmer and more comfortable headset.
There are also redesigned Touch Plus controllers with a more ergonomic form factor and haptics built in. Hand tracking will also be supported out of the box, so you can explore without controllers.
The pass-through cameras allowing you to see the outside environment are now full color and go along with numerous apps built with augmented reality and mixed reality applications in mind.
A 75-minute showcase presentation of games included a first look at their big launch title “Asgard’s Wrath 2” along with trailers for “Stranger Things VR,” “Attack on Titan VR: Unbreakable,” “Vampire the Masquerade: Justice,” “Underdogs,” “Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord,” “Silent Slayer: Vault of the Vampire,” “AEW: Fight Forever,” “Bulletstorm VR,” “Demeo Battles,” “Arizona Sunshine 2 VR” and a VR reimagining of iconic 1990s video game “The 7th Guest”.
Quest 3 will also be compatible with Quest 2’s library of over 500 VR games and apps along with boasting new games. Meta plans to share further details about the headset during its annual Meta Connect conference on September 27th.
Meta also announced that starting on June 4th, it will cut the Quest 2 price to $299.99 for the 128GB version and $349.99 for the 256GB version.
