“Avatar” Sequel Set For Max & Disney+

20th Century Studios

James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” is coming to SVOD in a big way. With $2.32 billion at the box office, the film became the third highest-grossing film of all time worldwide and is now set to begin streaming Wednesday, June 7th.

In a twist – the film will be made available not just on Disney+ where it was expected to go, but also on Max (formerly HBO Max) on the same day. Subscribers of both services will also have access to bonus content featuring filmmakers, cast and crew.

The reason for the joint release is due to a deal Disney made with WarnerMedia in 2021. Under that agreement, Max can share the streaming rights to Fox films released in 2022 with Disney+ and Hulu.

The film already hit sell-through digital platforms like iTunes, Amazon and VUDU on March 28th.

Set more than a decade after the events of the 2009 sci-fi box-office juggernaut, this first of four sequels begins to tell the story of the Sully family and lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure as they leave their home and explore regions of Pandora when a threat resurfaces.

Sigourney Weaver returns, this time as Jake and Neytiri’s adopted teenage daughter Kiri. Stephen Lang is back as Colonel Miles Quaritch – here as a Na’vi Avatar embedded with the memories of the dead soldier.

Also starring are Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Kate Winslet, CCH Pounder, Cliff Curtis, Matt Gerald, Joel David Moore, Giovanni Ribisi, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Jemaine Clement, Jack Champion, Dileep Rao, Filip Geijo and Duane Evans Jr.
