“Murder Mystery 2” Sets Near Netflix Record

Netflix

In its first three days of availability, Netflix’s “Murder Mystery 2” scored the second biggest opening weekend for a comedy film on the streamer with over 42 million views according to their own stats.

The sequel, which stars Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston, earned 64.42 million hours viewed and also appeared in the Top Ten in 91 countries.

Rewatches and first watches of the first film in the franchise also appeared in the Top 10 again this week, coming in at No. 2 with 24.7 million hours viewed.

In the new film set four years later, Sandler and Aniston return as Nick and Audrey Spitz, who are now working as full-time detectives. When their friend The Maharajah is captured and his bodyguard is killed, the Spitzes must find out who the kidnapper and killer are among a set of suspects.

The comedy did not go over well with critics or audiences, pulling in 45% (4.8/10) from the former and 51% (3.2/5) from the latter on Rotten Tomatoes. That’s on par with the original 2019 film.

The success comes as “The Night Agent” continued to dominate the TV side of Netflix, pulling in a further 216.39 million hours in the past week to bring its total to 385 million hours viewed after two weeks. That show has already been renewed for a second season.
