Peacock has given the green light to a movie based on the USA Network series “Monk” with multiple Emmy winner Tony Shalhoub set to reprise his iconic role of the obsessive-compulsive detective.
Series creator Andy Breckman is writing and executive producing the film which will be titled “Mr. Monk’s Last Case”. Randy Zisk, who directed 35 episodes of the show, returns to direct whilst David Hoberman will executive produce.
Former cast members Ted Levine, Traylor Howard, Jason Gray-Stanford, Melora Hardin and Hector Elizondo will all reportedly reprise their roles in the story in which Monk attempts to solve a very personal case that involves his beloved stepdaughter, Molly, a journalist preparing for her wedding.
The original series ran for eight seasons across 125 episodes on USA, helping kick off the scripted series boom for the basic cabler in the early 2000s with several hit series including “Burn Notice,” “Psych,” “White Collar,” “Royal Pains” and “The 4400”.
“Monk” was also a critical and awards success whilst its series finale in 2009 drew more than nine million viewers – a record for a scripted program on ad-supported cable until “The Walking Dead” came along shortly after.
The streamer has previously released two movies based on “Psych”.
