Former “Better Call Saul” star Bob Odenkirk has revealed that he is starring in a remake of the infamous 2003 cult classic “The Room” in an effort for charity.
Odenkirk will take on the lead role of Johnny, the central role originated by the film’s writer and director Tommy Wiseau. The original film opened to terrible reviews and poor attendance before becoming one of the biggest cult midnight films since “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”.
News first broke yesterday morning on the project via Slashfilm, with Odenkirk then corroborating the report on Twitter just a few hours ago, saying: “This is real. This is true. And let me tell you, I tried my best to SELL every line, as honestly as I could…and I had a BLAST.”
The feature-length project reportedly hails from Acting For a Cause, an organization that raises money for various charitable causes by asking for donations tied to digital performances with actors like Alex Wolff, Zazie Beetz and Justice Smith working with them.
In this case, “The Room” remake seeks to raise funds for the nonprofit organization amfAR which does AIDS Research. A photo from the project is up at Instagram and the majority of the production was reportedly shot on a green screen with Odenkirk having shot it in January. Bella Heathcoate also reportedly stars.
Wiseau’s representation has since told Variety that Wiseau-Films was not contacted on the matter of licensing and was unaware of the project until yesterday.
