“Thrones” Producer To Run Disney’s “Zorro”

Sony Pictures

Former “Game of Thrones” co-executive producer Bryan Cogman has been set as writer, showrunner and executive producer of the live-action “Zorro” TV series in the works for Disney Branded Television.

This is the ‘Zorro’ that “NCIS” and “That 70s Show” star Wilmer Valderrama is attached to both star in and executive produce, and has been dubbed a reimagining of the 1950s Disney-ABC series starring Guy Williams.

Valderrama will play the privileged caballero Don Diego de la Vega and his swashbuckling alter ego, the masked vigilante known as Zorro, in the days of Spanish California.

Upon returning to his hometown of El Pueblo de Los Angeles following a family tragedy, he discovers a culture of corruption and injustice that will lead him to take on the mantle of Zorro – “America’s first true superhero”.

The official synopsis describes the project as a “bold reimagining of Disney’s classic series for a modern audience” along with being an “epic adventure rooted in California’s rich and diverse history”.

It also promises plenty of “humor, sinister intrigue, romantic entanglements, and swashbuckling thrills.” Previously it was said to be done in a “very modern telenovela style”. Gary Marsh and John Gertz will also executive produce.

Cogman more recently was a consulting producer on the first season of Amazon Prime’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” and is penning the screenplay for Disney’s live-action remake of “The Sword in the Stone”.
