It’s official, HBO has officially ordered a second season of the television adaptation of Naughty Dog’s acclaimed video game franchise.
The order comes after just two episodes of the show’s nine-episode first season run have aired thus far. The series had HBO’s second-largest debut in over a decade and has surpassed 22 million viewers domestically.
It’s second episode saw a 22% surge of audience growth, the largest second week growth for any HBO Original series in the 50 years history of the network.
No word as to how many episodes the second season will have, but it will very likely begin adapting the “The Last of Us Part II” for the screen. Previously the producers have indicated that any adaptation of that larger and darker game will take more than one season to complete.
Executive producer Neil Druckmann says in a statement: “I’m humbled, honored, and frankly overwhelmed that so many people have tuned in and connected with our retelling of Joel and Ellie’s journey. The collaboration with Craig Mazin, our incredible cast & crew, and HBO exceeded my already high expectations. Now we have the absolute pleasure of being able to do it again with season two! On behalf of everyone at Naughty Dog & PlayStation, thank you!”
Executive Producer Craig Mazin says: “I’m so grateful to Neil Druckmann and HBO for our partnership, and I’m even more grateful to the millions of people who have joined us on this journey. The audience has given us the chance to continue, and as a fan of the characters and world Neil and Naughty Dog created, I couldn’t be more ready to dive back in.”
New episodes continue, with the third episode set to air this Sunday.
