“Chocolat,” “Most Wanted Man” Get TV Remakes

Miramax

The 2000 Oscar-nominated feature “Chocolat,” which starred Juliette Binoche, Johnny Depp, Judi Dench, Carrie Ann-Moss and Alfred Molina, is getting a TV series reboot.

Based on the books by Joanne Harris and directed by Lasse Hallstrom, the film was a critical and commercial smash, grossing more than $152 million worldwide.

Now, Atlantique Productions and Miramax TV will co-develop a French-language series adaptation expanding on the novels and the film and shifting the action to modern-day France.

The story will revolve around a woman and her daughter who settle down in a small town and shake things up, but their biggest challenge will be to convince the town’s folks to embrace the change they are bringing into town.

That’s not the only film being turned into a feature today. The Ink Factory (“The Night Manager”) has announced plans for a German TV version of John Le Carre’s “A Most Wanted Man” with “Snabba Cash” writer Oskar Söderlund attached as showrunner.

The story follows a young Chechen ex-prisoner who arrives illegally in Germany with a claim to a fortune held in a private bank. The property was previously adapted in 2014 into the film starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Willem Dafoe.

No broadcaster is attached as of yet, and the new version will be updated to a modern-day European context.
