Confusion has gotten deeper over “The Uprising,” the new Paul Greengrass period action-thriller starring Andrew Garfield.
Earlier this week, the film’s US distributor Focus Features appeared to change the title to “The Uprising: The Rise of Robin Hood”.
The reveal surprised people, as it indicated this would be an origin story for the 12th-century mythical folk hero rather than a straightforward take on the 14th-century English Peasants’ Revolt as was expected.
Though listed only as ‘Ploughman,’ Garfield is expected to be playing the real-life Wat Tyler – the leader of the ferocious working-class rebellion against the tyranny of King Richard II (Woody Norman).
There’s some thematic overlap of the common man fighting back, but otherwise Tyler and Hood have no connection and either way are two centuries apart, with Hood coming first – during the reign of King Richard I (Richard the Lionheart).
Now, a day later, Metro UK indicates that the film’s UK distributor is outright denying that it’s a Robin Hood movie and says in a statement about the film:
“Marketing materials posted by other countries that may appear in the UK online and on social media referencing Robin Hood are not issued or approved by us.”
Jamie Bell, Tom Hollander, Cosmo Jarvis, Jonny Lee Miller, Katherine Waterston, Thomasin McKenzie and Stephen Dillane co-star in the film, which hits the US on September 11th.
