“Picard” S3 To Have DS9, Voyager Callbacks

The third and final season of “Star Trek: Picard” will see the return of the core cast of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” for what’s been dubbed a ‘proper’ farewell for the crew.

However in a new interview for Den of Geek, showrunner Terry Matalas reveals that the series will go beyond honoring just TNG and will actually incorporate nods to both “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” and “Star Trek: Voyager”.

The third season is confirmed to pick up just shy of two years after the second season – putting the action firmly in the early 25th century. Matalas previously said the fallout of the Dominion War is important in the plot. Talking about how much the show has changed for the third season, he says:

“In my mind, I would’ve called it ‘Star Trek Legacy,’ I mean, it is truly a Picard story. He is the focus. But the spirit of it is different than seasons one and two, just because of what it is.”

He also says there is more going on than just bringing back the Enterprise-D crew:

“I think that it’s important to Deep Space Nine fans to feel seen. It’s a continuation of Voyager too, of course, with Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) in our show. If you’re going to be in this time period, there’s such a rich opportunity to honor what came before.”

He also says connection to the larger Trek universe of this time period is an important part of the new season:

“I just felt like Picard season three needed to feel like it fit into this universe. It was very important to me, first and foremost, that it treads new ground, but [also feel] like a continuation of the stories and arcs set up 30 years ago.

There’s a fine line between fan service and just honoring the universe that you’re in. So, I just went full tilt at the things that mattered to me.”

Matalas takes over as the sole showrunner on the third season. He and Akiva Goldsman split those duties on the second season while Michael Chabon served as showrunner of the first.

The final season sees Amanda Plummer take on the role of the season’s villain, Vadic, whilst Daniel Davis reprises his role of the holographic Professor Moriarty.

The final season premieres on Thursday February 16th, with the ten-episode run to continue through until April 20th.
