Netflix premiered “Wednesday,” its new spin on “The Addams Family,” this week to very solid critical and very good audience reviews.
The consensus seems to be that Jenna Ortega’s performance in the title role of Wednesday Addams has been universally praised, as has Tim Burton’s visuals and the show’s sense of humor.
Criticisms have mostly been lobbied at the story and teen drama is akin to a series on The CW, not unexpectedly as the show hails from former “Smallville” showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar.
Still, questions of a second season renewal are already being asked, and both Gough and Millar tell TV Line that should the series be greenlit for another season, they want to show bring back Addams family members as much – if not more so – than the first season. Miller says:
“[We’ve barely] touched the surface with those characters, and the actors are so amazing in those roles. Catherine is, I think, an iconic Morticia. The relationship between Wednesday and Morticia is also essential to the show, and the idea that Wednesday is trying to forge her own path outside the family is important. [We] definitely want to feature the family as we did this season in a couple of episodes if we were to get a second season.”
The series introduces parents Morticia and Gomez (Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzman), brother Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez), Uncle Fester (Fred Armisen), and manservant Lurch (George Burcea), all in guest starring capacities with disembodied hand Thing (Victor Dorobantu) a recurring character.
Should it continue, the plan is also to keep exploring Wednesday going through the tribulations of being a teenager and “learning to navigate the ups and downs of friendship”.
The full eight-episode first season of “Wednesday” is now up on Netflix worldwide.
