With a further $4.7 million in the U.S. this weekend, the re-release of James Cameron’s “Avatar” has made over $15 million domestically, and nearly $40 million worldwide.
Of that domestic total, $10.7 million of it is from IMAX screenings alone which has pushed its lifetime IMAX haul to $268.6 million. IMAX screens represented 18% of the global box office this weekend
Designed to drum up anticipation for December’s long-awaited Avatar: The Way of Water, the Avatar re-release has made over $15 million domestically, and nearly $40 million worldwide, proving again that there is a devoted fanbase for director James Cameron’s science-fiction franchise.
The film’s domestic total now stands at nearly $780 million – the fourth-largest of all time behind only “Spider-Man: No Way Home” ($814 million), “Avengers: Endgame” ($858 million) and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($936 million).
Worldwide, its lead as the biggest film of all time has now gone past the $2.9 billion mark – easily ahead of its nearest competition in “Avengers: Endgame” with $2.797 billion.
The re-release comes ahead of the new film “Avatar: The Way of Water” which opens on December 16th.
