“Scream 6” Goes Darker, Loses Campbell

Scream 6 Goes Darker May Lose Star
Paramount Pictures

This year’s fifth entry in the “Scream” franchise offered somewhat darker and bloodier kills than some of the previous sequels.

However they could well be subtle compared to what’s coming in the next outing. Cast member Jenna Ortega has revealed to Entertainment Tonight that she’s received at least some of the script for the next installment and promises it will be the most aggressive and violent yet:

“Ghostface gets a lot more intimidating. I just read part of the script, and it just gets more and more gory. I think that this is probably the most aggressive and violent version of Ghostface we’ve ever seen, which I think will really be fun to shoot.”

Ortega is reprising her role of Sam Carpenter, one of the survivors of the most recent Ghostface attack. She returns alongside Melissa Barrera (Sam), Jasmin Savoy Brown (Mindy) and Mason Gooding (Chad) whose characters leave Woodsboro behind and attempt to start a fresh chapter.

Hayden Panettiere is returning from the fourth feature and it’s expected Courteney Cox will be back as Gale Weathers too. But what about Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott?

Bloody Disgusting reported that rumors are circulating she won’t be back with “Campbell herself reportedly telling fans this news on the convention circuit.”

Deadline has now followed that up with a statement from Campbell who confirms she’s out and says:

“Sadly I won’t be making the next Scream film. As a woman I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream. I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise. It’s been a very difficult decision to move on. To all my Scream fans, I love you. You’ve always been so incredibly supportive to me. I’m forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years.”

Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are directing while James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick co-writing the screenplay. Shooting is slated to begin in early summer for a March 31st 2023 release through Paramount Pictures.
