Fathom Events and Universal Pictures are teaming up for an over 800 screen re-release of John Carpenter’s “The Thing” in cinemas, in time for the film’s 40th anniversary next month.
Kurt Russell, Keith David, Wilford Brimley, Donald Moffat, T. K. Carter, David Clennon and Richard Dysart lead the cast as members of a team of researchers in a remote facility in Antarctica. The group find themselves being hunted by an alien that takes the form of its victims.
Opening just a few weeks after “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” the film performed poorly at the box office and was mostly dismissed by critics. However, with subsequent home video and TV releases, the project quickly achieved cult classic status and is now considered one of the most influential horror films ever made.
It also boasted iconic creature designs and special effects from VFX guru Rob Bottin with contributions from Stan Winston.
The re-release will also treat fans with vintage, behind-the-scenes footage from the making-of documentary “The Thing: Terror Takes Shape”. The re-release screens on two days – June 19th and June 22nd with showtimes at 3pm and 7pm.
Ticket purchases will happen at the Fathom Events website or at participating theaters box offices.
