Following two years of delays, “Top Gun: Maverick” is hitting this Memorial Day holiday weekend and hopes to finally give us the return of a massive blockbuster launch that doesn’t revolve around superheroes.

The sequel is reportedly headed for the biggest opening of Tom Cruise’s career at the domestic box office with a four-day gross of at least $92 million, and plenty predicting it could go well above $100 million.

The film is being buoyed by ecstatic reviews which promise a must-see big screen experience, but it’s not clear whether older consumers will rush out to see the film on opening weekend. Indeed Cruise’s films, including the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, tend to open smaller but play longer than other tentpole juggernauts including the Marvel and “Fast and Furious” franchises.

In North America, ‘Maverick’ will host Thursday previews before unspooling everywhere on Friday across an astonishing 4,732 locations. Disney will also release “The Bob’s Burgers Movie” which has also garnered very good reviews and is tracking to gross $10-14 million.
