Film Workship

Iconic “Face/Off” and “Broken Arrow’ director John Woo is set to remake one of his early Hong Kong action film masterpieces for streaming service Peacock.

Woo will direct a remake of 1989’s “The Killer” which starred Chow Yun-Fat, Danny Lee and Sally Yeh. That film followed an assassin who has one more job to go before retirement – during which he accidentally blinds a nightclub singer.

He agrees to take on a new mission of assassinating a crime boss in order to pay for an expensive operation to save her eyesight. However, he will have to evade both the police and a powerful crime syndicate to do so.

The Cantonese-language feature, along with two other classics of the genre in “Hard Boiled” and “A Better Tomorrow,” cemented Woo as a master of the action genre. Woo has reportedly sought to remake “The Killer” in English for several years now.

Peacock’s President Kelly Campbell says: “We know people join Peacock to watch movies, so we are constantly adding more to serve fans. Together with the Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, we are excited to deliver fresh, exclusive, original films next year to our customers in addition to the legendary Universal Pictures blockbuster films and beloved franchises streaming now.”

The film is one of three announced today as being in the works for Peacock, the other two being the Lebron James origin story feature “Shooting Stars,” and the Will Packer-led “Praise This” which sounds like a younger spin on “Sister Act”.
