In the calm before the “Doctor Strange” storm, animated feature “The Bad Guys” topped the U.S. domestic box-office once again with $16.1 million and a domestic total of $44.4 million so far.
It was followed closely by Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” with a further $11.3 million – bringing its total to $160.9 million. That surpasses the first film’s total and makes it the best earning comic book movie (domestically) to date.
“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” slipped to third with $8.3 million with a $79 million domestic haul so far. Worldwide the film has amassed $329 million to date and is looking to end well below the disappointing results for the prior film in the series.
Robert Eggers’ blood-soaked Viking epic “The Northman” was fourth with $6.3 million, dropping 49% in its second week. So far it has earned $22 million domestically and $18 million internationally – making the chances of the $70-90 million budgeted film achieving profitability theatrically slim.
A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once” is proving a go-getter, taking in a further $5.5 million this weekend in fifth place – up 2% from its first wide release weekend last week. The film is one of the first indie movies to benefit from a platform release in recent times and so far has grossed $35 million in North America – excellent numbers for an indie film.
The only new opener this week was the Liam Neeson-led “Memory” action feature which bombed with a $3.24 million opening in eighth place – about on par with the just over $3 million opening of his last few vehicles of this type including “Blacklight,” “Honest Thief” and “The Marksman”.
