James Corden is set to depart CBS’ “The Late Show” next year. The host has discussed his decision on tonight’s broadcast of the program.

The actor and talk show host has been at the helm of the talk show since mid-2015 and has extended his contract with CBS until the Spring of 2023 – after that point he’s made it clear to management he will leave.

George Cheeks, president and CEO of CBS, says in a statement: “We wish he could stay longer, but we are very proud he made CBS his American home and that this partnership will extend one more season on ‘The Late Late Show.'”

Corden’s exit marks the end of the show’s fourth regular host since the series debuted in 1995. Tom Snyder led it for four years, followed by Craig Kilborn for five, and then Craig Ferguson for nine with segments from his tenure still talked about today.

Corden’s run has been largely driven by social media and segments attempting to go viral including some that have taken off like “Carpool Karaoke”.

While a new host is being sought, the whole late night talk show sector isn’t pulling in live linear audiences like they once did – with many opting to watch YouTube highlights after they air.
