The film adaptation of the “Uncharted” game franchise is coming in ahead of projections with the adventure film set to earn around $45-50 million domestically over the four-day Presidents’ Day weekend.
The film took in $15.4 million on Friday and is set up for a No. 1 spot debut. It’s on track for the biggest theatrical opening of 2022 so far and the biggest since Tom Holland’s last film “Spider-Man: No Way Home”.
While critical reviews have been bad, polling in at 39% on Rotten Tomatoes, audience reviews are coming in better on that site at 89%. Still, the B+ CinemaScore suggests it’s not likely to have too much in the way of legs.
With a $120 million production budget, the film needs to make good coin overseas. It pulled in $22 million last weekend from a dozen markets and is expanding this weekend to likely hit a global total of around the $100 million mark by the end of Sunday or Monday.
Whether it’s enough for Sony to pursue a sequel is unclear, but at least it looks like the studio will break even on the long-in-development film which changed stars, writers and directors multiple times until the present version arrived.
Elsewhere Channing Tatum’s “Dog” is also coming in above estimates, taking in $5.04 million on Friday and on track for a $15 million four-day debut. The project, marking Tatum’s first wide release since “Logan Lucky” in 2017, has scored good critical notices.
Not faring so well is 20th Century Studios’ “Death on the Nile” which will fall to fourth in its second weekend of release. The film garnered $1.7 million on Friday – a 65% drop from its opening day last week. “Spider-Man: No Way Home” will come in third and “Jackass Forever” is expected to be fifth.
