With no “The Mandalorian” this year, the big new bit of “Star Wars” content for Disney+ in 2021 is the spin-off “The Book of Boba Fett”.

Spinning off the fan-favourite character and following on from the events of the second season of “Mandalorian,” the new run sees the former bounty hunter (Temuera Morrison) and his partner-in-crime Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) taking over the remnants of the late Jabba the Hutt’s criminal empire.

Speaking with Empire recently, executive producer Jon Favreau confirms the series is set to explore the power struggle left after Jabba’s demise in “Return of the Jedi” a few years earlier:

“There is a power vacuum […] because Jabba is gone. Jabba was clearly a very strong and imposing leader, who people were very scared of, and who seemed to rule with an iron fist. You pull somebody like that out of the ecosystem of Tatooine – and Hutt Space in general – and you have the opportunity that’s ripe in the gangster genre.”

Part of the draw of the series is that it sees Boba, a skilled tracker and fighter, have to wad into territory he’s not that familiar with – politics and management:

“Although Boba Fett is a very experienced bounty hunter, he’s not experienced at running a criminal syndicate or managing forces […] He’s not normally a newcomer. He’s an expert as we see him in most areas. But in this case, he’s trying to transition to another position.”

Favreau, Robert Rodriguez and Dave Filoni all executive produce and direct episodes. Bryce Dallas Howard also directs while Kathleen Kennedy and Colin Wilson also serve as executive producers.

“The Book of Boba Fett” will premiere on December 29th exclusively on the Disney+ service.
