Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s newest film “Memoria” has set a rather unique release strategy.
The Tilda Swinton-led film’s U.S. distributor NEON has announced that the movie won’t score a traditional release in multiple theaters. Instead, the movie will be released in one city on a single theater screen for an exclusive week-long engagement.
Then, at the end of every week, the film will leave and move on to a different city and theater where it will play exclusively – essentially turning it into a traveling art exhibit.
To ensure that it stays that way, there are no plans to ever release the film on disc, on demand, or streaming platforms as Weerasethakul believes the theater experience is integral to the film itself.
The rollout begins the IFC Center in New York on December 26th. The film was recently selected to represent Columbia at the Academy Awards.
