“Sex and the City” Revival Tackles COVID

We know the revival of “Sex and the City” on HBO Max was going to have to deal with the evolution of how dating and hooking up have changed since the original.

What might surprise you is how current it will be. Speaking to Vanity Fair, actress Sarah Jessica Parker confirmed the limited series will incorporate the COVID-19 pandemic into the show.

In fact, incorporating it was expected as the setting is contemporary New York City and so it will deal with not just its impact on sex but also relationships both intimate and casual:

“[COVID-19 will] obviously be part of the storyline, because that’s the city [these characters] live in. And how has that changed relationships once friends disappear? I have great faith that the writers are going to examine it all.”

Showrunner Michael Patrick King is leading a writers room that otherwise entirely comprised of women whom Parker says will add their “life experience, political world views and social world views” to the mix.

The revival will follow Carrie Bradshaw (Parker), Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) and Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) as they navigate love and friendship now in their fifties.

Ten half-hour episodes are set to begin production in New York City in late spring. Kim Cattrall, who played Samantha Jones, will not be returning.
