Netflix’s new French mystery comedy series “Lupin,” starring “The Intouchables” and “Jurassic World” star Omar Sy, has pulled in massive numbers.
Estimates are that the series, which launched on January 8th, is on track to be watched by 70 million households in its first 28 days. That would make it Netflix’s second-biggest new series launch ever, behind only “The Witcher” and ahead of recent hits like “Bridgerton” (63 million) and “The Queen’s Gambit” (62 million).
The series is a contemporary reimagining of Maurice LeBlanc’s early 20th century novels about world-famous gentleman thief Arsene Lupin (who also inspired the beloved “Lupin the Third” anime series & films).
Set in contemporary Paris, Sy plays professional thief Assane Diop who uses Lupin as his inspiration to get vengeance on the wealthy Hubert Pellegrini (Herve Pierre). Pellegrini orchestrated the death of Assane’s Senegal immigrant father and left Assane an orphan, so now Assane uses his charisma and skills to try and expose Pellegrini’s crimes.
The current batch is only the first half of the first season, the remaining five episodes have yet to set a launch date. The show is the first French series to land on the streamer’s U.S. Top 10 list and also launched to No. 1 across numerous European countries. Reviews are strong too with a 93% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The series is created by George Kay (“Criminal UK,” “Killing Eve”) in collaboration with Francois Uzan (“Family Business”). Louis Leterrier (“The Incredible Hulk,” “Now You See Me”) helmed the first three episodes with Marcela Said (“Narcos”) helming the other two.
