Warners Wanted WW84 Opening Cut

Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman 1984” hit at Christmas like a bombshell, the film has led to divisive arguments across websites and social media with some of it interesting, some of it inane and some of it just plain nasty.

One thing is certain in that the new film is very different to the previous one, though the film’s opening flashback to the Themyscira is arguably the closest in tone as it serves as both a reminder of her heritage and hints at the themes to come in the film.

Speaking with JoBlo recently, Jenkins revealed that Warners wasn’t keen on revisiting Themyscira. In fact, the studio asked that Jenkins cut one of the two opening sequences in the film – either the Themyscira or the 1980s mall scene. Jenkins thought both were critical:

“I was like, we can’t, we can’t cut either. The reason that I ended up realizing that you need the Amazon is because I suddenly, you do that thing where you’re like, wait, you have to remember all the people that haven’t seen the first ‘Wonder Woman’ who watch this on a plane. And suddenly it’s like, oh, it’s super hard to understand who Diana is and what’s going on without touching base there.

I love the fact that you hear all of the ‘being a great hero takes your whole life,’ you know? So there was this wisdom there that they were trying to tell her which is not about being the strongest or the fastest, it’s about these complex observations you have to make during life in order to become a true hero. I love that she doesn’t understand that until that final speech.”

The comments come as the film’s divided reaction has had an impact. According to The IMDB, the film now holds a 5.7 rating, putting it below the 6.0 score of “Suicide Squad” to become the worst DCEU film. The first film, with a 7.4, is the top-rated DCEU film on the site.
