Netflix Acquires Russo Produced “Mosul”

Netflix has acquired the Anthony and Joe Russo-produced action feature “Mosul” with plans to release it next month.

“Deepwater Horizon” and “World War Z” scribe Matthew Michael Carnahan penned and directs the film inspired by a 2017 New Yorker. It follows a fight between a renegade police unit and the ISIS fighters who have destroyed their homes.

“Mosul” premiered a year ago at Venice to solid reviews, but the film’s challenging commercial prospects (subtitled, no major stars, complicated politics) meant its had difficulty getting picked up.

The project was initially picked up by 101 Studios but those plans fell through. Netflix, whose biggest film hit to date was another Russo-produced action vehicle with the not dissimilar “Extraction” back in April, seems like a understandable fit.
