While a third season of “The Mandalorian” has not been ordered yet, pre-production is already quietly underway on the series which has been one of the least impacted by the current coronavirus pandemic.
Speaking with THR recently, and ahead of the second season’s planned debut in October, creator and executive producer Jon Favreau confirms COVID-19 restrictions will not heavily impact production of the potential third season of the hit “Star Wars” prequel series.
This would include no delays. A big part of the reasoning is because most of the shooting is done in virtual sets and on secure studio lots where minimal crew and there’s highly controlled entry and exit points:
“The fact that the set is much more contained is a benefit, because you can limit the number of people. A lot of the people controlling it are doing it remotely from what we call the Brain Bar, which is a bank of gaming computers, essentially. The amount of people near the camera could be much smaller than [usual].
We also shoot a lot outside, which is helpful, too. We build to a moment in filming more like an animated production, where we have a lot of storyboards, a lot of discussions and scouting in virtual reality. We use cinematic tools in VR much the same way we did for The Lion King and The Jungle Book. A lot of times the actors you are seeing on the screen aren’t actually there on set.”
The second season sees Temuera Morrison taking on the role of Boba Fett, Katee Sackhoff as a live-action Bo-Katan, Timothy Olyphant in an unspecified role, and Rosario Dawson rumored to be up for Jedi Padawan turned Rebel Alliance spymaster Ahsoka Tano.
The series is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order as we follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic. Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Carl Weathers and Giancarlo Esposito are all returning from the first season.
