Hanks Sad “Greyhound” Is Skipping Cinemas

The Tom Hanks-led WW2 submarine action thriller “Greyhound” was originally scheduled to hit cinemas earlier this Summer but is now arriving on Apple TV+ this Friday, July 10th.

Apple acquired the property for a reported $70 million and, speaking to The Guardian this week, Hanks revealed that he isn’t happy with a direct-to-streaming launch. Hanks calls it: “an absolute heartbreak. I don’t mean to make angry my Apple overlords, but there is a difference in picture and sound quality.”

Hanks plays Ernest Krause, a USN commander who must protect an international convoy of 37 Allied ships from wolf packs of German U-boats as they cross the North Atlantic. At the same time Krause, commanding the titular Navy destroyer leading the fleet, battles his own self-doubts and personal demons. Stephen Graham, Elisabeth Shue and Karl Glusman co-star.

The $50 million feature, based on “Horatio Hornblower” author C. S. Forester’s WW2 naval thriller novel “The Good Shepherd,” was helmed by Aaron Schneider. The film is exclusive to Apple TV+ and so won’t appear on VOD rental services, like Apple’s own iTunes. Instead people will have to get Apple TV+ to see it.

It might be worth it though, reviews have just started coming out and they sound fairly good. The film marks only the third feature Hanks is the credited writer on following “That Thing You Do” in 1996 and “Larry Crowne” in 2011.
