Production on Christopher McQuarrie’s back-to-back “Mission: Impossible 7” and “Mission: Impossible 8” films shut down in Venice earlier this year right before they were able to begin shooting.
This week, whilst speaking on BBC Radio 4, the film’s first assistant director Tommy Gormley has revealed that the team remains confident they can meet the target timeframe for the production – even with changes which will see much of the outdoor location work shot first.
Gormley says: “We hope to restart in September. We hope to visit all the countries we planned to. We hope to do a big chunk of it back in the U.K. on the backlot and in the studio.” He also admits the biggest challenge will be filming such a high-scale project with all its location shooting:
“This is our challenge. We are not a chamber piece movie. We do spectacle, and that is what people expect of us. If we have the protocols in place and we break down all the procedures very carefully…we will get it going again. Some things are very challenging such as stunt scenes, crowd scenes etc. but we can’t do a ‘Mission Impossible’ movie and not have a fight scene or car scenes in it.”
Gormley says the shoot aims to wrap around April or May next year. The comments come a day after the British Film Commission has released the COVID-19 safety guidelines which will allow film and high-end TV productions to resume in the UK.
“Mission: Impossible 7” is set to be relessed on November 19th 2021 with the eighth to follow in November 2022.
