Forecast: Disney+ Users To Surge By 2025

UK firm Digital TV Research has posted a forecast which suggests the coronavirus pandemic will boost the fortunes of many SVOD services in years to come – especially Disney.

The study they’ve published breaks down what they believe will be the number of global subscribers to the various SVOD platforms by the year 2025. China, where many global SVOD services are not permitted to operate, will be a major force with 269 million subscribers to local services.

Of the rest, Netflix is expected to come out on top with 258 million but Disney+ is the one they see as surging, suggesting the platform will reach 202 million global subscribers by 2025. That’s WAY ahead of their previous outlooks and the studio’s own figures which suggest it will be less than half of that.

Amazon will fare well with 141 million, HBO & Apple TV+ aren’t expected to go great with 25 million and 14 million respectively, while other services are expected to account for 252 million users. The report arrives ahead of the debut of multiple new streaming services in coming weeks and months including HBO Max on May 27th, Peacock on July 15th, a retooling of CBS All Access later this year, and plenty of others in smaller markets.
